The United States, U.S Secretary of States, John Kerry, has stated that extremism such as the Boko Haram insurgency cannot be defeated through repression or fear.

Kerry, who is a 2-day visit to Nigeria, stated this in Sokoto on Tuesday at the start of a visit to the West African nation.

He maintained that the battle against Boko Haram will only succeed if the reasons why people join Islamist militant groups is it tackled and if the government and its military gain the trust of the people.

According to him, “We also know that beating Boko Haram on the battlefield is only the beginning of what we must do.

“Building public trust in government also requires cooperation from the military and law
enforcement. Extremism can’t be defeated through repression or fear.”
