Goodluck Jonathan Says "Niger Delta Militants Want Me Dead"

Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan has said militants operating in the oil-producing Niger Delta still want him dead.

Mr Jonathan, who stepped down last year, was responding to a claim that he was backing a group called the Niger Delta Avengers, which has been behind a recent spate of attacks that have severely damaged the country’s oil output.

The former president, through a statement issued by his spokesman, said this was “a facile contrivance so badly concocted that any discerning mind would easily see through its disingenuous and duplicitous nature”.

It points out that Mr Jonathan was the target himself of several assassination attempts by a
group called Mend (Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta ) and adds:

We, therefore, have no doubt in our mind that Mend, as a group contracted to go after Jonathan with the mind of assassinating him, is yet to abandon this criminal and ignominious craving.”
